Enderby Area Community Hub

With your help, opening in early 2026!

Our goal is to honour the heritage of St. Andrew's United Church by repurposing the building into a secular, non-profit community centre for community services, educational, recreational, private and religious events, business incubation and cultural & arts experiences for all.

Welcome to the Enderby Area Community Hub

The Enderby Area Community Hub (EACH) was founded as a BC non-profit society to acquire St. Andrew's United Church in Enderby to repurpose it as a secular, non-profit, mostly volunteer-run Community Centre/Hub. Once acquired, our name will be attached to the building - we will operate as the Enderby Area Community Hub. The EACH Board of 11 members is a combination of former members of that congregation and members of the community they have convinced to help facilitate the effort, along with some key extra volunteers not on the Board.

We are asking for your help to make this happen so we can open in early 2026!

This beautiful and functional heritage building was built by the community and opened in 1906 as St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. After the United Church of Canada's (UCC) formation in 1925, it was operated as St. Andrew's United Church for exactly 100 years, until it was closed at the end of 2024, and ownership was returned to the UCC for $1.

To acquire this building is a once in a generation opportunity for our Enderby community to expand our current very limited community gathering spaces for an incredible value and at the same time honour the heritage of a very usable, well-maintained building. To build this 7400 square foot building (3700 main/3700 lower level) with today's costs would not be possible for our small city. A very conservative estimate of rebuild cost would be somewhere between $4 and $6 million (at $550-800 a square foot). Vernon's new cultural centre is being built for $1500 a square foot.

EACH will honour the 120 year legacy of the congregations to unify and connect the Enderby & Area community by making the space available for gatherings, services and experiences for the greater good of our city. Our focus will be rental space for education, recreational, cultural & arts performances and events, private events, social services, business incubation, and both secular & religious gatherings.

There is particular enthusiasm for the 2400 square foot sanctuary space since there is no dedicated theatre/performance space in Enderby (AL Fortune SS is not really accessible to non-school users). The sanctuary, which has phenomenal acoustics, would be renovated first with a new floor and to remove most of the pews in favour of stackable chairs to make the space so much more rentable and flexible. Pew capacity is currently in the range of 120-150 persons.

And we will of course continue to provide a home to our core tenant, the Enderby & District Community Resource Centre (edcrc.ca) which has been providing critical social services to young and old and in-between for more than 30 years, most of those years spent in the church.

The building will be easily converted to secular purposes as religious icons are at a minimum. Of course, we will be open to religious uses as well. The former St Andrew’s congregation have indicated interest with occasional church service gatherings and of course the continued fundraising events for MacKenzie Camp critical to its operation.

We expect to have CRA Charitable Status by the beginning of 2026 - at that point we will be able to issue charitable receipts for donations to the Enderby Area Community Hub (EACH). Donations to our non-profit before this status will NOT receive a charitable receipt.

EACH will continue the legacy of the St. Andrew's congregations and the modern United Church of Canada with non-judgmental, open-minded, empathic and charitable values, creating a safe space for all people in our community.

MORE ABOUT THE ACQUISITION

In mid-July, EACH finalized a contract to purchase the church from the United Church of Canada and after a set of conditions are waived, we will close on the purchase just before Christmas 2025. EACH is the UCC's preferred community buyer, thus we were able to purchase the church building for the BC Assessment value of $461,500, which we feel is significantly below market value. The purchase and an improvements fund will be facilitated by a separate community-funded mortgage corporation, the Enderby United Mortgage Corp (EUMCo). Our day-to-day funding of expenses will come from providing the Hub to tenants and event renters and by holding our own events. We will pay down the mortgage with community donations, endowments and grants, and from the support of government organizations. We hope to complete payment of the mortgage in a window of 5 to 8 years.

Once the mortgage is paid off, our rental revenue will continue to fund improvements as needed, but any net proceeds from operations beyond that will be applied to a community focused charitable fund, and will benefit: subsidized rent to our non-profit renters that serve the community, and perhaps ultimately donations to worthy non-profit, social services, arts, educational, health, recreational and other community-building initiatives, much like the Enderby Lions and the Enderby & District Care Society (dba the Stocking Up Shop).
